A sanctuary of learning and life

Cambridge is home to the world famous University of Cambridge. The University occupies most of the centre of the city and gives it a beautifully academic feel.

An easy day trip from London, or a worthwhile holiday destination in its own right.

Founded as a Roman town, it began to achieve fame when a group of scholars were forced to flee Oxford in 1209 due to issues with the locals and resettled for learning there. This has helped stoke the long running rivalry between the two Universities.

As the University grew, so did the finances available and subsequently the buildings of the University. King’s College, Trinity College and St John’s are particularly well known for the beauty of their design and quality of their education. Trinity College is famed as having graduates receive more Nobel prizes than all of Italy combined.

Wondering the streets of Cambridge can lead to many serendipitous discoveries. As a city where history is made you can stumble across such sites as the Mathematical bridge, famed for the complexity of its design (and the legend that it does require nails) and The Eagle Inn, where Francis Crick and James Watson went for a pint to celebrate their discovery of DNA in 1953 – a very British thing to do.

One can also go punting (a small boat pushed by a pole traditional in the city). Punting can enable you to enjoy “the backs” of Cambridge which are the various canals that weave between the Colleges, or you can take a day trip out to the countryside to see the beautiful village of Grantchester.
